We are all familiar with the hazards of energy (thermal, electrical, kinetic, etc.) and toxicity. But functioning is also a source of danger. Yet, this functioning concerns many systems such as industrial installations or transport means (plane, train, car). This new hazardous phenomenon is revealed, for example, by the malfunctioning of these systems (failures or deviations), but also by their misuse, both of which can have dramatic consequences.
Functional safety offers an original approach to controlling this new hazard. Its interest is demonstrated by its adoption by all industrial sectors: process, automotive, railway, aviation, machine, nuclear, etc. This module will allow you to discover this new perspective on safety.

Unité 1. Sécurité fonctionnelle des procédés IEC 61511 (version française)
Les procédés industriels comme une installation pétrochimique ou de production d’hydrogène, de biogaz, d’engrais ou de produits pharmaceutiques, mettent en œuvre des produits dangereux tant pour l’Homme que pour l’environnement. De multiples moyens sont à disposition de l’ingénieur en sécurité des procédés pour maitriser ces risques. Parmi ceux-ci, la sécurité fonctionnelle contribue à la prévention des accidents. Publiée dans sa dernière version en 2016, la norme IEC 61511 (« Sécurité fonctionnelle - Systèmes instrumentés de sécurité pour le domaine de la production par processus ») propose une démarche pour mettre en œuvre cette sécurité fonctionnelle et en assurer l’efficacité. Cette Unité introduit les notions de cette norme et explique également ses apports et ses limites afin de mieux l’appréhender et la prendre en main.
Unit 1. Functional safety for the process industry sector IEC 61511
Process industries such as a petrochemical facility, or a plant that produces hydrogen, biogas, fertilizers or pharmaceuticals require the use of products that are hazardous for both humans and the environment. Multiple measures are available to the process safety engineer to control these risks. Among these, functional safety contributes to the prevention of accidents. The latest version of the IEC 61511 standard (Functional safety - Safety instrumented systems for the process industry sector), published in 2016, proposes an approach to implementing functional safety and ensuring its effectiveness. This Unit introduces the concepts found in the standard, and explains its benefits and limitations in order to better understand and use it.

Bernard LUONG is the director of the Paris branch of ISO Ingénierie. He joined ISO Ingénierie in 2018 as a project manager after starting his career at Bureau Veritas in 2011. He has been working for more than 10 years on safety instrumented systems and the implementation of IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 standards. He assists his clients in the application of these standards, from risk analysis to verification of the achievement of SIL levels. In 2016, he became a Quali-SIL trainer and was certified by TUV FSEng in 2019.
